Historical Society T-Shirt

The Rose Hill Historical Society is selling T-shirts for our building fund.

2017 is the 130th year since Rose Hill moved to its current location to be close to the railroad as it had just came through the area. The railroad brought "progress" to Rose Hill making it better for the farming community to get crops to market as well as delivery of goods to residents. Read More...

Fireworks Sales A Success

We were open June 27 through July 5 and it was hot. Anyway, in the process we helped support 5 community groups, made money for the Jack Carr Memorial Scholarship and scraped together a few dollars for the society.

The raffle winners:
Connie Hayden won a homemade Uncle Sam and Jim Unrein received a $400 family fireworks package.

We will call this wonderful fundraising activity spearheaded by Daryl Futhey and Rhonda Carr Cooper a terrific success.

Two Old Photos Added

Janelle Showalter has graciously provided two more nice pictures of early Rose Hill basketball players. They are the last ones on the Old Pictures page. We are hoping to identify more of the folks so if you recognize anyone please let us know.

Flapjacks & Cowboys

“Flapjacks and Cowboys” fundraiser at Rose Hill Recreation Center with Chris Cakes food and a silent auction. Saturday, April 16. Come hear a true cowboy talk about a real drover’s life. Enjoy a pancake dinner if you like. Silent auctions and sports-team quilt raffle also. Speaker free @ 6:00, pancake feed and auction starts @ 5 and lasts until 7. Read the flyer.

March Meeting Notice

The next meeting of the Historical Society will be Wednesday, March 2, in the old 4-H building at 7 pm. Members, if possible, please attend this meeting! There will be a short business meeting then discussion about facility needs of the society. We may be making a very big decision at this meeting and would like as much input as possible.

Providence KS History

Providence was a community in Richland Township between Douglass and Rose Hill. The Butler County Times-Gazette recenty published a two part article covering much of the history of this interesting town. You can read more on our History Stories Page.

Jack Carr Memorial Service

A Memorial Service for Jack Carr will be held at the Rose Hill Methodist Church on Saturday, March 14, at 11:00 am. Memorials can be directed to the Rose Hill Historical Society where Jack was on the board of directors or to the Rose Hill Senior Center, where he served many years as the director.

Society board member Jack Carr has died on his 78th birthday, February 28, 2015. Details will be posted by his son Scott on Facebook.

Our condolences go out to Jack's family and many friends.

Lori DeWinkler, host of the Butler County portion of Kansas Trails, has researched and written a detailed story of a killing near Rose Hill in 1903. She has given permission for us to read it and a lot of other interesting information from early Butler County. Links are on the History Stories page; look for Man Shoots His Brother-In-Law.

In celebration of Rose Hill's 125th Anniversary, The Rose Hill Reporter will feature a page from the city's past on the last Thursday of each month for the rest of this year. The Reporter has graciously consented to publication of these stories on our website and the first story can be found here.

Rose Hill’s Hometown Christmas

Rose Hill’s Hometown Christmas will be Saturday, December 18, from 2 to 6 pm. The Historical Society will have a float in the Parade of Lights, which starts at 6 pm. Come to the celebration and see your friends and neighbors!

Society Receives Grant

Board member Jack Carr recently drove to Topeka to pick up a $1,000 gift grant given to the historical society to purchase computer equipment. It was provided by the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. We all thank them for their generosity!
